NISO Open Teleconference

Open Teleconference June 2023 - ISO TC46 2023 update
Monday, June 12, 2023, 3:00pm - 4:00pm (Eastern Standard Time, US & Canada)

The topic for the June open teleconference will be a recap of the ISO TC 46 Plenary meeting "week," which was held in Paris, France, this year from May 22-26, with international participants connecting across multiple time zones for all associated meetings. Please join our exchange!

Todd Carpenter, NISO Executive Director, Keondra Bailey, NISO Assistant Standards Program Manager, and Nettie Lagace, NISO Associate Executive Director, will discuss the meeting, NISO's role there, and the current questions under consideration in TC 46 conversations. There are many international projects currently underway which have a relationship with and impact on standards work more locally in the United States library and information community.

TC 46 is an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) technical committee, focused on Information and Documentation. Its scope includes standardization of practices relating to libraries, documentation and information centers, publishing, archives, records management, museum documentation, indexing and abstracting services, and information science. NISO is designated by ANSI to represent U.S. interests as the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to TC46.

Five TC 46 Subcommittees held plenary meetings during this block:

  • SC 4 (Technical interoperability),
  • SC 8 (Quality - Statistics and performance evaluation),
  • SC 9 (Identification and description),
  • SC 10 (Requirements for document storage and conditions for preservation),
  • SC 11 (Archives/records management),

along with meetings of other subcommittee working and discussion groups and of course the final TC 46 plenary.

NISO also serves as the Secretariat for SC 9, with Todd Carpenter serving as the SC 9 Committee Manager.

NISO Roundtable Webinar

Controlled Digital Lending
Wednesday, June 14, 2023, 11:00am - 12:30pm (Eastern Standard Time, US & Canada)

How do we establish an appropriate understanding of controlled digital lending? While it supports the  robust use of published scholarship in a library environment, at the same time it also tests the traditional bounds of lending practices. Recognizing that no single library collection can possibly contain every publication required by its patrons, shouldn’t the various affected stakeholders be working towards a collaborative solution —a set of best practices? The speakers in this webinar will explore the need for controlled digital lending, as well as the sensitivities associated with it, in a world that increasingly reads electronically.

Confirmed speakers (others TBA) include, John D'Angelo, Head of Access & Circulation, Fordham University; and Nancy Sims, Copyright Program Librarian, University of Minnesota.

NISO Virtual Event

2023 NISO Humanities Roundtable
Tuesday, June 20, 2023, 10:30am - 4:30pm (Eastern Standard Time, US & Canada)

This day-length conference continues in the tradition of the previous 20 years by drawing on the expertise of scholarly associations, university presses, librarians, researchers, and more to provide participants with exciting discussions around the needs of those working in the humanities. This year’s program will examine how the transition to open access and the emergence of new technologies will shape the future of these disciplines. In addition to thought-provoking keynotes and expert panels, the event will include plenty of time for interactivity and discussion, providing a forum for stakeholders to come together and identify trends, share best practices, and set priorities that reflect the needs of the humanities community.

Confirmed speakers (additional speakers TBC): Ramón Alvarado, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Data Science Initiatives & Data Ethics Coordinator, University of Oregon; Ashley ChampagneDirector of the Cener for Digital Scholarship, Brown University Library; Divine Fuh, Director, HUMA, University of Cape Town; Bryn Geffert, Dean of Libraries and Professor of History, University of Vermont; Katherine McDonough, Senior Research Fellow, The Alan Turing Institute; Lucy Montgomery, Professor of Knowledge Innovation, Curtin University; Erinma Ochu, Wallscourt Associate Professor of Immersive Media in the College of Art, Technology and Environment at the University of the West of England, Bristol; Roopika Risam, Associate Professor in the Digital Humanities and Social Engagement Cluster, Dartmouth College; and Charles Watkinson, Associate University Librarian for Publishing/Director, University of Michigan Press.

NISO On the Road

NISO @ ALA Annual 2023
Thursday, June 22, 2023 - Tuesday, June 27, 2023, McCormick Place Chicago Convention Center

NISO looks forward to seeing you in-person at our 2023 ALA Annual sessions and at this year's NISO-BISG Changing Standards Landscape Forum, held on Friday, June 23, 2023 (12:00 - 4:00pm)

The last several years have highlighted pressing concerns about social responsibilities and our collective action or inaction. Book publishers have begun to measure diversity in many ways: the books we publish, the authors we sign, the staff we employ, the content we promote, the labor policies we adopt, and more. Increasingly, environmental sustainability has also risen as a concern and become part of industry conversations around making book publishing more inclusive and promoting social justice more generally. Pressingly, we now need to move from talking about change to making an actual difference across the industry. The challenge is about more than just what publishers do: it stretches across the supply chain, affecting manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and libraries, as well. This program will identify primary concerns around diversity and sustainability, document what has been done, outline what more needs to be done, and discuss the obstacles and opportunities that remain.

More details to come! Please visit the event page for the latest updates.

August 2023

NISO Two-Part Webinar

Metrics: Assessing Usage (Part One)
Wednesday, August 9, 2023, 11:00am - 12:30pm (Eastern Standard Time, US & Canada)

Usage metrics are both useful and controversial — a complicated arena of exploration. New technologies and policies lead to new behaviors and practices. How much should libraries rely on usage to justify their continued investment in a publication, database, or platform?  What sorts of metrics do publishers use, and how? How well do our existing definitions and tools work in an increasingly open access world? Are there opportunities for libraries and publishers to work together on new and more equitable metrics? In our increasingly data-driven world, this two-part webinar will enable a much-needed deeper discussion of these and other important questions for all stakeholders in the information community.

Metrics: What Additional Metrics Are Needed? (Part Two)
