NISO Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) Webinar: Effect of Generative AI on Library Discovery
In 2024, the NISO Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) Standing Committee published Generative Artificial Intelligence and Web-Scale Discovery. The white paper examined the results of a survey conducted by ODI to assess the information community's perception of the impact of AI on library discovery services. As part of the outcome of that report and to continue to engage with the community, ODI will host a series of webinars exploring AI and discovery and the future of library discovery.
The first webinar of the series, Effect of Generative AI on Library Discovery, explores the way users search for materials and how libraries have adapted. The tools libraries offer their campuses to find library-provided materials -- discovery layers, databases, aggregator platforms, etc. -- are rapidly evolving as generative AI tools are included in them. What does this mean for the way library users search for and access library materials? How does this change the way libraries make choices about discovery tools and instruction? How do library workers and patrons interact? Join ODI co-chair Ken Varnum in conversation with Sarah Barbrow (University of Michigan), Sima Bloch-Winkler (Ex Libris), Robert Hilliker (Springer Nature), and Alfred Wallace (Iowa State University) as they analyze the current landscape and discuss potential pathways forward.
