NISO to Host Electronic Management Forum in September

NISO To Offer "The What, Why, and How for Managing E-Resources"

BCR Co-sponsoring Two Days on Electronic Resource Management
Baltimore, MD July 25, 2007 Highlighting the issues of implementers, the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) will host a two-day forum on electronic resource management. Presentations designed to answer pressing questions about the impact of ERMs on internal management and workflow will come from all major sectors of the NISO community. NISO's E-Resource Management Forum: The What, Why, and How for Managing E-Resources will take place September 24-25, 2007 at The Magnolia Hotel in Denver, Colorado (http://www.niso.org/news/events_workshops/erm07/)

The how-to character of the Forum will provide practical guidance both to librarians currently implementing electronic resources management systems and those weighing ERM options. Subscription agents, ILS vendors, and publishers will also have a rare opportunity to integrate their perspectives and questions into sessions that examine ERM selection and operation.

Beginning with discussions of the benefits and uses of ERMs, as well as selection criteria, the sessions move to project-specific implementation, including workflow/staffing, usage, reports, and case studies.

Topics include the following:

* The role of ERM systems in helping users to locate and access materials, and missing links in ERMs
* The need for interoperability, and ERM and ILS integration
* System performance.
* Selection criteria.
* Approaches to licensing in the ERM environment
* Serials issues such as products, subscription, online holdings, and release notifications
* The big gap between a library that has ERM and one that has an ERM in production, and then cover "how to do it."
* Automatic feeds of data into the system, as well as the source of the feeds
* The value of the Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative (SUSHI)
* Different aspects of ERM in their environments, including additional tools to plug into ERMs
* Workflow from a management perspective
* Panels providing "front room" versus "back room" perspectives
* A holistic approach to the topic of ERM
