A series of webinars exploring AI and library discovery, hosted by NISO's Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) Standing Committee, launched on September 8 with The Effect of Generative AI on Library Discovery.
The tools libraries offer their campuses to find library-provided materials—discovery layers, databases, aggregator platforms, etc.—are rapidly evolving as generative AI tools are included in them. What does this mean for the way library users search for and access library materials? How does this change the way libraries make choices about discovery tools and instruction? How do library workers and patrons interact? Ken Varnum explored these questions in conversation with Sarah Barbrow (University of Michigan), Sima Bloch-Winkler (Ex Libris), Robert Hilliker (Springer Nature), and Alfred Wallace (Iowa State University).
