Margaret Meserve Is the New Edward H. Arnold Dean of Notre Dame's Hesburgh Libraries

November 2025

The University of Notre Dame has appointed Margaret Meserve the Edward H. Arnold Dean of Hesburgh Libraries, with responsibility as vice president and associate provost for the University of Notre Dame Press, the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, and the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Meserve had served as Interim Dean of the libraries following K. Matthew Dames's move to a new role at the university.

She is a historian specializing in the Italian Renaissance and holds degrees from Harvard University and the University of London. In 2022 she served as president of the Association of Research Libraries.

“The Hesburgh Libraries are vital to Notre Dame’s aspirations to be the leading global Catholic research university,” [University President Reverend Robert A.] Dowd said. “Over her 20-year career at the University, Margaret has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to Notre Dame’s mission, including most recently as interim dean, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues. I am confident that under her guidance, the libraries will continue to advance the University’s research, teaching and learning goals while fostering Notre Dame’s engagement with the global scholarly community.”
