About the Webinar
Managing serials subscriptions is no small feat. Consider just how many types of information--and formats--go into the tracking of subscription information throughout the chain: from the publisher to the seller or content provider and then to the library and the user, serials subscription information is created, translated, managed, tracked, and used for access and evaluation, but in each instance what that information looks like, how it is used, and how it is maintained can vary widely. But it is essential for our work and for our services.
In order to provide a means of sharing this information so that it can be understood and used throughout the supply chain, ONIX for Serials was developed to communicate information about serials products and subscriptions. In this webinar you will learn not only about three of these formats and what information they provide, but learn first-hand from implementers about how they can be put into place and used to help simplify and improve serials data exchange. The webinar provides three case studies to focus on:
- ONIX SPS (Serials Products and Subscriptions), which provides information about a product--including for instance, price catalogs from publishers to agents or price quotes to libraries--that can be helpful not only in evaluating packages but also in helping a library to identify all the titles that it receives from a particular vendor for collection management purposes;
- ONIX SOH (Serials Online Holdings), which allows publishers and content providers to communicate library-specific, detailed holdings information from publications access management systems to libraries;
- ONIX SRN (Serials Release Notification), which can work not only at the issue level but also for articles to alert libraries about the print publication as well as electronic availability of items to assist in claiming and with link resolver access.
ONIX for Serials is a family of XML formats for communicating information about serial products and subscription information, using the design principles and many of the elements defined in ONIX for Books. The development of ONIX for Serials has been undertaken in partnership between EDItEURand NISO. Initially through a Joint Working Party and under the guidance of the ONIX Serials Steering Group, the original work has been taken forward to the point where three sets of application messages are being implemented, each supported by an outline specification, XML schema, and full HTML documentation.

This webinar is for publishers and content providers who are interested in learning how to implement the ONIX for Serials messages as a service for their customers, and for librarians who are interested in receiving this information and would like to learn more about how to do so. Anyone who would like to know more about what information each of these messages provides will find this webinar useful.

SPS enables the communication of information about serial subscription products, with or without price information, including the option of sharing subscription information relating to a particular subscriber. Tim will highlight the use of ONIX SPS at Nature Publishing Group to support online entitlements information flows between our fulfilment system and the Nature.com hosting platform.
SOH: Serials Online Holdings
1:25 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.:
With SOH, electronic serials holdings details can be communicated directly from publication access management systems to user libraries. Jerry will speak to the benefits of using the SOH file to all parties, from ProQuest as the database aggregator to another vendor like Serials Solutions to the Librarian and Library User.
SRN: Serials Release Notification
1:45 p.m. - 2:05 p.m.:
SRN is a format for communicating information about the publication or electronic availability of one or more serial releases -- letting you know when an item is available.
2:05 p.m. - 2:25 p.m.
2:25 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
