Strengthen Your Copyright Confidence with NISO's Latest Training Series
Copyright issues to continue to evolve as libraries, publishers, educators, and researchers navigate new technologies and changing legal landscapes. From interpreting fair use and licensing agreements to understanding how artificial intelligence is impacting scholarly communications, information professionals are encountering challenging decisions where legal, ethical, and institutional considerations converge. Questions surrounding copyright rarely have simple answers, particularly as new technologies challenge established practices and expectations. NISO’s upcoming training series Copyright Essentials from A to AI offers an opportunity designed to help participants build practical knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to navigate these evolving issues.
The curriculum begins with an introduction to the foundations of US copyright law and the analytical framework that will guide participants through the series. Subsequent sessions examine fair use, the public domain, statutory exceptions for libraries, licensing, author rights, open movements, and the complex relationship between copyright and AI. A dedicated session on copyright in popular culture and digital media draws on examples from music, sports, and entertainment to explore how copyright principles apply in familiar contexts. The series concludes with a capstone session in which participants develop or refine copyright-related programs, policies, and practices for their own organizations.
Over the course of eight weekly, 90-minute virtual sessions taking place from October 1–November 19, facilitators Willa Liburd Tavernier and Karen Stoll Farrell of Indiana University will explore how copyright law operates within the scholarly communications environment. Through guided discussions, case studies, and collaborative learning, participants will examine the broader questions of equity, access, ownership, and market forces that influence decision-making.
