Ithaka S+R Appoints New Managing Director

January 2026

Ithaka S+R, the research and consulting organization serving academic publishers, institutions, and museums, has appointed Martin Kurzweil as its new managing director. He is stepping into the role previously held by Catharine "Cappy" Bond Hill, who is transitioning to a new role as senior advisor.

From ITHAKA president Ken Guthrie:

Ithaka S+R, under Martin’s leadership, will continue to further ITHAKA’s enduring mission to improve access to education and knowledge, through its work to help colleges and universities, libraries, publishers, policymakers, and philanthropies navigate economic and technological change, connect people to opportunity, and accelerate the creation, preservation, and communication of knowledge. Martin has worked alongside Cappy and therefore is well positioned to build on the many successes of Cappy’s tenure. He brings the leadership and results-driven focus that will carry us forward to even further mission impact.

Kurzweil joined Ithaka as Vice President in 2017, founding Ithaka's department of educational transformation, and in this role, he worked with Hill on projects including the American Talent Initiative, which focuses on providing opportunities for lower-income students. He also developed Transfer Explorer, a national platform improving credit transferability. With this appointment, Ithaka S+R aims to continue Hill's legacy of expanding access to higher education for all learners.
