Libraries and Data Science Academy receive major consulting grant
North Carolina State University Libraries, L.S.A. Member, News Announcement, February 15, 2024
Data science is an increasingly important element in all business sectors and facets of life. How can higher education better prepare students to engage meaningfully with data? In a new project funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the NC State University Libraries and the Data Science Academy (DSA) are answering that question.
The project, “Models in Data Science Consulting in Higher Education: Disseminating Current Practices and Knowledge,” will produce a practical manual on how to provide data science consulting that can be followed at other institutions, as well as a white paper on the collaborative authoring of the manual. The $174,994 grant also provides resources for the dissemination of this information through presentations at conferences and professional meetings on these consulting topics.
ORCID Announces Third Round of Global Participation Fund Recipients
ORCID, Inc. Voting Member, Blog Post, February 15, 2024
Increasing Global Participation is one of ORCID’s four priorities outlined in From Vision to Value: ORCID’s 2022–2025 Strategic Plan. We believe that the more fully populated, sufficiently complete ORCID records and integrated systems there are, the more value that stakeholders can gain from participating in ORCID, and in everything we do, our goal is to create the conditions to allow this to happen. Our Global Participation Fund (GPF), which is one of the initiatives of our Global Participation Program (GPP), is an important program to drive these outcomes by improving understanding and encouraging uptake of ORCID in under-represented countries in the Global South.
We are proud to share that in less than two years since launching the GPF, ORCID has provided nine grants under two different programs—Community Development and Outreach and Technical Integration. Now ORCID has selected six more recipients. The GPF grants are awarded on a biannual basis in the amount of US$5,000–20,000, with a duration of 12 months

JSTOR is Now Available in 1,000 Prisons
ITHAKA/JSTOR/Portico, Voting Member, News Announcement, February 20, 2024
At the end of 2023, JSTOR—a vast digital library of secondary and primary sources to support teaching and learning—reached a once unimaginable goal: providing JSTOR access in 1,000 prisons. Spread across four continents, the JSTOR Access in Prison initiative now supports the education and growth of more than 550,000 incarcerated people.
Incarcerated learners have been left behind for decades. Limited access to the internet and scarce funding and support for higher education in prisons made access to digital libraries like JSTOR all but impossible. In October 2021, with funding from the Mellon Foundation, JSTOR set an ambitious goal to change that. The aspiration? For every incarcerated college student in the United States to have access to JSTOR, along with the research skills to use it and other digital resources.

OCLC researchers co-author new publication: Improving the Usability of Archaeological Data through Written Guidelines
Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), Voting Member, News Announcement, February 14, 2024
New publication out from Cambridge University Press & Assessment: Improving the Usability of Archaeological Data through Written Guidelines by Anne Austin (University of Missouri-St. Louis), Ixchel M. Faniel and Brittany Brannon (OCLC), and Sarah Whitcher Kansa (Open Context).
Archaeologists frequently use written guidelines during excavations to create usable data within and across projects, but previous research has demonstrated that the resulting datasets are often difficult to (re)use. This study examined how archaeological excavation teams used and implemented written guidelines. The authors offer recommended best practices to improve the quality and usability of archaeological data and a Written Guidelines Checklist to help project directors improve their written guidelines before, during, and after fieldwork as part of a collaborative process.
