Public Comments
In order to ensure that NISO standards are developed by consensus for the benefit of the greater information community, public comments are regularly solicited on NISO standards and other consensus documents (e.g., recommended practices), during development via open lists, during trial use phases, and when at ballot.
In addition, there are times that NISO and its leadership will solicit feedback from the community on extant standards, potential developments, and for other purposes.

Standards At Ballot
Feedback Requested -- Use of Published Standards (March 2009 - June 2009)
NISO recognizes that its standards require regular review to remain effective. For ANSI/NISO standards under periodic maintenance, this must be completed not later than five (5) years after the ANSI approval date, with the first step of establishing a voting pool. Four NISO standards have failed to receive the required number of members (15% of NISO's voting membership [link to http://www.niso.org/about/roster]) joining a reaffirmation ballot voting pool.
The following standards are thus being reviewed to determine whether withdrawal or downgrading of these publications is called for. If you are actively using these standards or have comments on why these standards should be continued as ANSI/NISO published standards, please do so at http://www.niso.org/contact.
Six-month extension requests were sent to ANSI 27 February 2009 for each of the following standards, with the note that: “We have been unable to obtain the required minimum numbers in a voting pool to ballot this standard for reaffirmation. We plan over the next several months to canvas the broader NISO community to determine if and how this standard is being used, prior to taking further action such as considering a withdrawal, downgrading it to a non-consensus document or trying to reform a sufficient voting pool.”
