Annotation: The idea of a simple unique identifier that everyone in the world could use to identify the same person, corporate body, or similar entity has been proposed many times during the last 30 years. Finally, an international standard (ISO 27729) for an International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) has been approved to respond to this need. This article discusses the development of the ISNI standard, the ISNI identifier architecture, and how the ISNI International Agency is creating the initial database of ISNIs.
