NISO's Metadata Primer: A 2017 Success Story

With 2017 drawing to a close, we're reflecting on the work we've done this year (and as always, preparing for what's next). One item that was a great success for NISO in 2017 was published in the beginning of the yearour primer Understanding Metadata, by Jenn Riley, Associate Dean, Digital Initiatives, McGill University Library, which as of today has been downloaded 82,755 times.

The primer demystifies a type of information that is ubiquitous in our lives but that can be challenging to produce, store, and understand. Coverage includes topics such as metadata types, standardization, and use in the cultural heritage sector and in the broader world. The Primer is accompanied by plentiful examples of metadata at work. Understanding Metadata, like its series companion on Research Data Management, is licensed for reuse under a Creative Commons-BY-NC 4.0 license.
