Panel 1: "Measuring the Information Age: Issues for Libraries"

Panelists representing five different perspectives on library service will present their views on the changing role of the library and respond to the question: How can you measure today what you will need to report tomorrow? Panelists have been asked to propose a single, most provocative or outrageous issue, idea or challenge.

Meeting in small groups you are asked to discuss these questions:

  • What information do you need to:
    Make decisions
    Advocate locally
    Advocate nationally for services provided
  • What are the 3 top issues or services that you are trying to measure? Have you found ways to do that?
  • How do we measure?

Using Concept Matrix #1 as a discussion guide, each group will prepare a "headline" to summarize key conclusions. Members of the Forum Planning Committee will be group discussion facilitators.

Using Concept Matrix #2, each group is asked to discuss how the topics and information presented in Panel 2 apply in their sectors or library communities. Discussion will focus on these questions:

  • In the context of the changing role of libraries:
    What data do you collect?
    What data do you need?
    Can you get the data you need when you need it?
  • How would we use: standards, best practices, and guidelines?

Members of the Planning Committee and panelists will sit-in on the group discussions.
