Opening Plenary: Challenges and Opportunities
for E-Resource Management
Jill Grogg, Electronic Resources Librarian and Associate Professor,
The University of Alabama Libraries
biography •
presentation
Electronic resource management systems (ERMS) are no longer breaking
news for many library staff members, but they continue to present
challenges and opportunities for libraries. We will explore where
ERMS have been and where they are going while discussing how
ERMS can help (or hinder) workflows and end user experiences.

The ERMS Value Proposition
Norm Medeiros, Associate Librarian of the College & Coordinator for Bibliographic and Digital Services, Haverford College
biography • presentation
This presentation will highlight the unique value of electronic resource
management systems (ERMS) for academic libraries. It will focus on
specific challenges to e-resource management and the means through
which ERMS can help. It will also note challenges to ERMS implementation
and ongoing maintenance. |

Finding the ERM that fits Now... and Later
Wendy Shelburne, Electronic Resources Librarian, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
biography • presentation
This presention will explore the questions involved in ERM selection
with a particular focus on the strengths, weaknesses, and needs of
your organization, and what your organization hopes to achieve moving
forward with the implemenation of an ERM. |

Building Your ERM Knowledge Base:
Bigger isn't necessarily better,
or is it?
Susan Davis, Head, Electronic Periodicals Management Department,
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
biography • presentation
Deciding what information to collect in your ERM is no easy task.
This presentation will review some of the important issues to consider
when planning your implementation: How much information do you
really need? Where does this information currently reside and
how can you incorporate it into your system? What are the ongoing
maintenance considerations? What staff do you have available? |

Professor, The University of Alabama Libraries

notes
What do you want in an ERM? In this break-out session,
librarians, publishers, and vendors discuss together their ERM priorities. |

Interoperability with ILS Acquisition
Systems
Angela Riggio, Head, Digital Collections Management, UCLA Library
biography
• presentation
Almost a year ago, the Steering Committee of the Digital Library Federation
Electronic Resources Management Initiative Phase 2 discussed the need
for interoperability between ERMS and ILS acquisitions systems. A subgroup
of "ERMInators" volunteered to further investigate this idea
in the form of a White Paper, and conveniently, the final version is
scheduled for release soon. Following a brief overview of the progression
of ERMS development, I will relate the salient ideas and issues raised
in the White Paper, and focus on the feasibility and desirability of
interoperability, and the ever-present and continuing challenges such
an implementation might face. I hope that the session will encourage
a lively discussion between ERMS vendors and implementers.
Interoperability between ERM Systems and Library Acquisition
Systems: A Vendor Perspective
Jeff Aipperspach, Technical Product Manager, Serials Solutions
biography • presentation
An ERM vendor will offer perspective on why cost and bibliographic
metadata should be available within both an ERM application and
an ILS acquisitions module. Further discussion will center on the
need for true cross-platform interoperability between the two types
of systems, and the impact that such interoperability could have
on library workflow. |

Working Together to Find Solutions
Sandy Hurd, Director of Strategic Markets, Innovative Interfaces, Inc.
biography • presentation
People are looking at ways not only to manage e-resources,
but also how to best deliver them. We should be taking a holistic approach
to this effort: Looking at all the pieces and how they hang together
so we can better focus on and work together to find solutions for key
components of this process is vital to us all.

Gathering Data: What data do I need and where
can I find it?
Oliver Pesch, Chief Strategist, E-Resources, EBSCO Information Services
biography • presentation
ERM systems are designed to be the central place to
capture all the critical information about e-resources to aid in the
acquisition, access, administration, support and evaluation of those
resources. The E-Resource Management Initiative (ERMI) report, sponsored
by the Digital Library Federation, lists some 300+ data elements that
could potentially be needed to assist in the “management” of
an e-resource. Knowing what data needs to be captured is important;
however, the daunting task is actually collecting and inputting the
data. This presentation will: provide an overview of the data to be
captured; look at some of the sources for this data; and, report on
initiatives underway that will remove much of the labor in collecting
and entering the data. |

Managing the Workflow
Helen Clarke, Head, Collections Services, University of Calgary Library
biography • presentation
Discussion of the practical implications of ERMS implementation. The
University of Calgary has used the purchase of the ERMS as an opportunity
to re-organize, creating new staff positions and realigning work flows.
The ERMS marks commitment to being an electronic library, moving staff
resources and attention to sustaining the digital collection and reducing
processes devoted to print materials. How does the ERMS support this
move, and what are the limitations as we move into an environment of
ever increasing complexity and numbers?

How Do ERMs Improve the User Experience?
George Machovec, Associate Director, Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries
biography • presentation
A fully configured ERMS typically includes subscriptions management, an
A-Z interface, link resolution, and other related tools. When properly configured
and used, these can greatly enrich the user experience in using electronic
resources. This presentation will examine some of the key elements
in this type of integration and will use the Gold Rush ERMS as a case study.
Gold Rush is an ERMS developed by the non-profit Colorado Alliance of Research
Libraries. It has an interesting niche in the ERMS marketplace sitting
between open source solutions and more expensive commercial alternatives. |
