About the Webinar

Resource Description and Access (RDA) is a standard for descriptive cataloging, replacing AACR2, that provides instructions and guidelines on formulating bibliographic data in a linked data environment. Cataloging of special materials, such as reproductions, microforms, rare materials, etc. has always had unique requirements, which is also true when using RDA for serials cataloging. Catalogers dealing with these special materials are experimenting with using RDA to meet the needs of their users and staff to effectively describe these resources.

Presenters during this joint NISO/NASIG Webinar will explore the topic of specialized RDA cataloging, the different formats requiring an extra level of data for cataloging, and share experiences with converting specialized collections into RDA.

Filling in the Blanks: RDA for Moving Images and Music
Mary Huismann, Music/Media Original Cataloger, University of Minnesota

The presenter will cover Resource Description and Access (RDA) and special format materials, multimedia materials that consist of items made up of more than one type of material. These can include books or serials in conjunction with audio tapes, video tapes, DVDs, as well as various other combinations of non-book materials. This issue presents serials catalogers with both a problem and a solution: the problem presents as a lack of specific “guidance” for most special format materials; and the solution is based in development of community-based best practice guides.

Also covered will be the RDA best practice guides:

Mary Huismann, Music/Media Original Cataloger at the University of Minnesota, has worked extensively with music and media cataloging. She is an active member of the Music Library Association and the Online Audiovisual Catalogers (currently serving as Cataloging Policy Committee Chair). Mary has been a member of the MLA/OLAC Funnel for the National Libraries RDA Test, the MLA RDA Implementation Task Force, the OLAC DVD/Blu-ray Task Force, and served as a project leader and trainer for the University of Minnesota’s RDA implementation project.

CONSER Implementation of RDA
Les Hawkins, CONSER Coordinator, Library of Congress

The presenter will talk about the development of CONSER guidelines for implementing RDA for bibliographic description, as well as development of RDA serials training. Background provided will be based on implementation of the CONSER standard record RDA elements. The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) perspective on how certain types of reproductions will also be discussed. The Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statement 1.11 implemented in February of 2015 essentially reverts the practice outlined in RDA 1.11 to the previous AACR2/LCRI practice for microform and print on demand reproductions. The PCC practice is to record data from the original in RDA elements and treat details of the reproduction as related manifestations for microforms and print on demand reproductions.

Les Hawkins has been coordinator of the CONSER program at the Library of Congress (LC) since 2003. CONSER is the Cooperative Serials Program of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), an authoritative source for bibliographic records, documentation, and training materials for serials cataloging. Les has been involved with the implementation of CONSER guidelines for RDA bibliographic description. He has participated in the development of LC-PCC Policy Statements for RDA related to serials and integrating resources. Les also helped develop and deliver RDA coursework for Library of Congress staff members and Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) participants.

Applying the RDA CONSER Standard Record to Rare Serials
Robert L. Maxwell, Senior Librarian, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University

In this session, Maxwell will demonstrate cataloging a simple rare serial, emphasizing the rare provisions in the RDA CONSER Standard Record.

Robert L. Maxwell is a senior librarian at the Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, where he has chaired the Special Collections and Formats Catalog Department and catalogs special collections and classics materials. He won the 2002 ALA Highsmith Library Literature award for the book Maxwell’s Guide to Authority Work (2002) and is the author of a number of other books on cataloging published by ALA, including Maxwell’s Handbook for RDA (2013), winner of the 2014 ABC-CLIO Library Publishing Award and the 2015 Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Outstanding Publication Award. He has taught cataloging at Brigham Young University and the University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science and has chaired the Bibliographic Standards Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). He has been a voting member of the ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access, the body responsible for developing official ALA positions on revisions to RDA. In addition to an MLS from the University of Arizona, he holds a JD from Brigham Young University and a PhD in classical languages and literatures from the University of Toronto.
