IJsbrand Jan Aalbersberg, SVP, Journal and Data Solutions, Elsevier

IJsbrand Jan Aalbersberg is Elsevier’s SVP Journal and Data Solutions, in which role he exploits new technologies to enable scientists to communicate science in new and engaging ways, like through 3D visualizations, interactive maps and plots, and a number of data discoverability mechanisms. IJsbrand Jan first joined Elsevier in 1997, and worked in a variety of positions to bridge the gap between science, publishing, and technology. As Elsevier’s S&T Technology Director from 2002 to 2005, he was one of the initiators of Scopus. Between 2009 and 2013, he worked in Elsevier’s STM Journals to focus on Content Innovation and the Article of the Future project. IJsbrand Jan was awarded a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Leiden in 1987 and worked for 10 years at Philips Research in both The Netherlands and the USA.

 

  Barry Bealer, CEO/Co-founder of RSI Content Solutions

Since co-founding RSI Content Solutions in 2000, Barry has served as president and CEO of the company. Under his leadership, RSI has grown to be a leading provider of content management solutions and services to publishers, media companies, Fortune 1000 businesses, and government agencies. A 25-year veteran of the software and information industries, Barry has held executive positions with Reed Elsevier and project management and senior software engineering positions for GE Aerospace. In addition to being a frequent speaker and moderator at industry events, Barry has held board and committee level positions for the Software and Information Industry Association, Society for Scholarly Publishing, and ASIDIC. Barry was inducted into the Philadelphia 100 CEO Hall of Fame in 2011. He holds an MBA from St. Joseph’s University and a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Millersville University.

 

 

Beth R. Bernhardt, Assistant Dean for Collection Management and Scholarly Communications, University Libraries, University of North Carolina Greensboro

Beth Bernhardt is the Assistant Dean for Collection Management and Scholarly Communications at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has her graduate degree in Library Science from the University of South Carolina. Beth has over twenty years of experience working in academic libraries, fourteen of those years specializing in electronic resources. She serves on the Carolina Consortium team that works with schools in North and South Carolina. Beth serves on several publisher advisory boards. She is currently the program director for the Charleston Conference.

Discussion Moderator: What Libraries Still Need from Discovery Layers

Sommer Browning is Head of Electronic Access & Discovery at Auraria Library, a busy, urban library that serves University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver. Her research focuses on user access to electronic resources, from troubleshooting user obstacles, customizing discovery layers, and examining library workflows to improve access.


 

Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, National Information Standards Organization (NISO)

Todd Carpenter is currently Executive Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), a Baltimore-based non-profit that fosters the development and maintenance of standards that facilitate the creation, persistent management, and effective interchange of information used in research and learning. Working with NISO's broad constituency, Todd is working to improve the efficiency of the standards development process, extending the scope and participation of the community in standards creation and adoption, and enhancing the training and outreach programs NISO sponsors.

Prior to joining NISO, Todd had been Director of Business Development with BioOne, an online aggregator of scholarly journals in the biological sciences. Before joining BioOne, Todd was the Journals Marketing Manager at The Johns Hopkins University Press and participated in the development of Project Muse.

He has also held marketing management positions at the Energy Intelligence Group, a news service covering the oil and natural gas industries and The Haworth Press, a scholarly and professional publisher. Todd is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a master degree in marketing from The Johns Hopkins University.

 

 

Ben Daigle, Discovery Services Librarian, OWU Libraries, Ohio Wesleyan University

Ben Daigle is the Discovery Services Librarian at Ohio Wesleyan University, a small liberal arts university in Delaware, OH. His professional interests center on students’ and scholars’ experiences of information discovery in both physical and virtual spaces.

In his role at Ohio Wesleyan, Ben’s work straddles the traditional boundaries between public and technical services, giving him insight into users’ direct experiences of the library and the technical ability to make continuous improvements to those experiences. He is a strong advocate for iterative and user-centered design practices and believes strongly that, rather than forming barriers to discovery and access, technology should be invisible to the researcher.

Prior to joining the Ohio Wesleyan University Libraries, Ben served as a discovery service implementation manager at OCLC, working with dozens of libraries to implement OCLC’s WorldCat Local discovery layer. Prior to that, he supported the digital content management group at educational publisher Pearson Education. Ben brings a unique perspective to librarianship influenced by his previous work in the technology and publishing industries.

Timo Hannay is Managing Director of Digital Science. He previously worked at Digital Science's sister organization, Nature Publishing Group, where he was director of Nature.com. In his former lives, Timo was a research neurophysiologist (in Oxford and Tokyo), journalist (at The Economist and Nature) and management consultant (at McKinsey & Co.).


 

 

Nettie Lagace, Associate Director for Programs, National Information Standards Organization (NISO)
Welcome & Introductions

Nettie Lagace is the Associate Director for Programs at NISO, where she is responsible for facilitating the work of NISO's topic committees and development groups for standards and best practices, and working with the community to encourage broad adoption of this consensus work. Prior to joining NISO in May 2011, Nettie worked at Ex Libris, where she served for 11 years in a number of library and information provider-facing roles, most recently Product Director, working on the SFX link resolver, Verde electronic resource management software, and bX scholarly recommender service. Her previous positions were at Baker Library, Harvard Business School, and the School of Information, University of Michigan. Nettie holds a Masters of Library and Information Studies degree from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College.


R. David LankesProfessor and Dean’s Scholar for the New Librarianship at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies; Director of the Information Institute of Syracuse; author of The Atlas of New Librarianship
Closing Keynote Speaker: Publisher of the Community

R. David Lankes is a professor and Dean’s Scholar for the New Librarianship at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and director of the Information Institute of Syracuse. Lankes has always been interested in combining theory and practice to create active research projects that make a difference. Past projects include the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology, the Gateway to Education Materials, AskERIC and the Virtual Reference Desk. Lankes’ more recent work involves how participatory concepts can reshape libraries and credibility.

Lankes is a passionate advocate for libraries and their essential role in today’s society. He also seeks to understand how information approaches and technologies can be used to transform industries. In this capacity he has served on advisory boards and study teams in the fields of libraries, telecommunications, education, and transportation including at the National Academies. He has been a visiting fellow at the National Library of Canada, the Harvard School of Education, and the first fellow of ALA’s Office for Information Technology Policy. His book,The Atlas of New Librarianship won the 2012 ABC-CLIO/Greenwood Award for the Best Book in Library Literature.

 

Franny LeeVice President, Business Development & Co-Founder, SIPX

Franny Lee is Vice President, Business Development & Co-Founder of SIPX. Originally a composer and jazz musician, Franny was drawn to the fields of copyright and digital communication by experiencing firsthand its effect on the music industry. She has worked on a variety of complex copyright issues for over 10 years. Franny is a lawyer in both the United States and Canada, and has litigated digital rights and internet questions in the entertainment, media and communications industries, as well as worked in government agencies on copyright collective proceedings and orphan works applications. Franny holds a BFA from York University, LLB / JD from Queen’s University, and LLM in Law, Science & Technology from Stanford University. She served as Resident Fellow for the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, focusing on using technology to improve the copyright landscape and driving the research that led to the creation of SIPX, Inc.

 

Maryann Martone, Ph.D.Professor of Neuroscience, University of California, San Diego

Dr. Maryann Martone is co-director of the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR) at the University of California San Diego. She joined the department of neurosciences at UCSD in 1993, where she is currently a professor in residence.

Dr. Martone received her BA from Wellesley College in biological psychology and her Ph. D. in neuroscience in 1990 from the University of California, San Diego. She is the principal investigator of the Neuroscience Information Framework project, a national project to establish a uniform resource description framework for neuroscience. Her recent work has focused on building ontologies for neuroscience for data integration. She recently finished her tenure as the US scientific representative to the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility (INCF), an international organization dedicated to developing tools and standards for neuroscience data exchange.

Dr. Martone is a practicing neuroscientist, with expertise in neuroanatomy, and light and electron microscopy. For the past decade, she has been working in the area of neuroinformatics to increase access to and utilization of neuroscience data. To further develop the framework, she heads the ontology development program for the INCF and the Data Standards Workstream for the newly launched One Mind for Research campaign. Through NIF and her neuroscience background, Dr. Martone has a unique global perspective on issues in data sharing and utilization in the neurosciences and has gained considerable insight and expertise in working with diverse biomedical data. She has also continued to explore how these knowledge frameworks can be used to solve difficult problems in neurodegenerative disease through modeling of structural phenotypes in animal models of human neurodegenerative conditions.

 

 

John Mark OckerbloomDigital Library Architect and Planner, University of Pennsylvania

John Mark Ockerbloom is a digital library planner and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a PhD in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. At Penn, he is involved in a variety of projects that produce and consume linked and open data. These include Penn's implementation of VIVO, a researcher profiling service; TheOnline Books Page, an index of nearly 2 million freely readable online titles; and Forward to Libraries, a service that links those titles, local collections of over 600 local libraries, and thousands of Wikipedia articles. He has also served in planning and oversight committees affiliated with NISO and DLF, and with projects like DSpace and the Global Open Knowledge Base. His interests include discovery, metadata, copyright and open access, repositories, and preservation of digital content.

 

Ido PeledDirector of Solution Architecture, Ex Libris

Ido Peled is the Director of Solution Architecture overseeing the presales activities in North America, including product presentations, demos, webinars and more. Ido joined Ex Libris 7 years ago as part of the development team in the company headquarters in Jerusalem. Prior to his current position, Ido was the product manager for Rosetta, a digital presentation solution and Primo, the company’s discovery and delivery solution.


 

 

 

Jeff PenkaDirector of Channel and Product Development, Zepheira 

Jeff Penka is the Director of Channel and Product Development at Zepheira with a strong focus on lean product management, iterative business and product concept development, and practical, outcomes-based agile development processes.

Prior to joining Zepheira, Jeff was most recently the Portfolio Director of the End User Services Product Portfolio at OCLC responsible for over 20 global products including worldcat.org, WorldCat, FirstSearch, Syndication and Partner services, and QuestionPoint. Through his career, Jeff has developed a number of globally deployed, multi-sided strategies and products designed to simultaneously meet the needs of diverse stakeholders ranging from internal audiences and external partners to the purchasing organizations and direct-to-Web consumers.

As a consultant and executive, Jeff has worked across a variety of industries including banking, pharmaceutical/medical, information technology, communications, cultural heritage, education, and government.

Jeff is an author, recognized speaker, and has served in a variety of capacities in standards organizations including NISO’s Discovery to Delivery Topic Committee and the Networked Reference Services Group. Jeff also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Syracuse iSchool Master’s Program teaching information systems, entrepreneurship, and program management.

Jeff is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with Masters Degrees in Education and Communications, in addition to studies in The Ohio State University’s Max M. Fisher Executive Education program. 


Alberto PepeCo-founder of Authorea, Associate Research Scientist at Harvard University
Authorea: Write and manage data-driven, interactive scientific articles in a collaborative environment

Alberto Pepe is an Associate Research Scientist at Harvard University and the Co-founder of Authorea, an online collaborative platform to write scholarly papers. He recently obtained a Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of California, Los Angeles with a dissertation on scientific collaboration networks. Prior to starting his Ph.D., Pepe worked in the Information Technology Department of CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland. Pepe holds a M.Sc. in Computer Science and a B.Sc. in Astrophysics, both from University College London, U.K. He was born and raised in the wine-making town of Manduria, in Puglia, Southern Italy.

 

Dr. Frances Pinter, Founder and Executive Director, Knowledge Unlatched
Knowledge Unlatched – Navigating Through the Rapids of Change

Dr. Frances Pinter is a serial entrepreneur who has been at the forefront of innovation in the publishing industry for nearly forty years. She is passionate about books, and about the potential of new technology to increase access to knowledge.

As the founding publisher at Bloomsbury Academic, Frances pioneered the use of open content licenses for Humanities and Social Sciences monographs. Under her leadership, Bloomsbury took the bold step of ‘giving books away for free’ in digital form, using Creative Commons Non-Commercial licenses and demonstrated that doing so made good commercial sense. As the Publisher of the Churchill Archive for Bloomsbury Frances has used digital technology to demonstrate the ways in which the world can interact with iconic historical documents. Frances has a track-record of finding innovative ways to increase access to knowledge. She was Publishing Director at the Soros Foundation (Open Society Institute) which involved supporting the growth of publishing industries in transition countries after the fall of communism. In the late 90s she established eIFL, a library consortium that straddles nearly 50 countries. Earlier in her career she founded Pinter Publishers that also owned Leicester University Press and established the imprint Belhaven Press. Frances is a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and a Visiting Fellow at the Big Innovation Centre in London.

 

 

Tara RobenaltVice President and General Manager, Workflow Solutions, HighWire

Tara Robenalt leads the business unit focused on solutions to support the scholarly workflow for researchers, publishers and librarians with the flagship product, eStacks, a tool for researchers to collect, store, organize, and share the scholarly content that interests them most.

Tara joined HighWire in 2012. She has extensive experience developing and launching new products including B2B, B2C, and enterprise solutions for K-12, higher education, professional training industries. She began her career in product management at Oracle Corporation, and followed that with 11 years at IXL Learning, an educational technology company, where she was most recently the Director of Publishing Solutions. As one of the original employees at IXL Learning, Tara led the development of three successful e-learning web products from concept to launch, including an online books platform that serves K-12 and higher education markets. She also managed strategic relationships with textbook publishing partners, including Cengage Learning, McGraw-Hill, and Wiley.

Tara holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
 

 

Bruce Rosenblum, CEO, Inera, Inc.

Bruce Rosenblum, CEO of Inera Incorporated, has more than 30 years of experience designing and implementing electronic publishing solutions. He also consults on the application of XML in publishing and the design of electronic production workflows. He co-authored the JATS/NLM DTD suite and developed the CrossRef Metadata Deposit Schema. At Inera he leads software development of eXtyles and Edifix. Prior to joining Inera in 1997, Mr. Rosenblum was Vice President of Software Development at Turning Point Software. He is a frequent speaker at publishing and XML-related conferences, and he served on the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Board of Directors from 2005 to 2013.

 

 

Elise Sassone, Manager Sales Operations Americas, Discovery Services Liaison, Springer

Elise joined Springer in February 2013 as an Account Specialist on the North American Academic & Government Sales team, helping customers with licensing, invoicing, and access to content. She transitioned over to Sales Operations and Discovery Services Liaison in March of this year. In her off-time, Elise enjoys good food, good beer, travel, and reading as much as she can. 

   Jake Zarnegar, Chief Business Development Officer, Silverchair

As Chief Business Development Officer, Jake leads the mission of Silverchair’s sales and marketing teams to ensure that all STM publishers are fully versed in Silverchair's software platforms and services and how publishers can work with Silverchair to successfully execute their online publishing strategy. 

After joining Silverchair as an intern in 1996 while still in college, Jake gained hands-on experience with structured content workflows, software development, and semantic enrichment technologies. In recent years he has served in a variety of senior leadership roles at Silverchair including Chief Technology Officer and President. 

During his tenure as CTO (2005 – 2009), Jake led the creation of a family of technologies at Silverchair including the application of semantic metadata to clinical content, ontology management tools, and an e-learning CMS/LMS platform. These technologies now form the backbone of Silverchair’s major publishing platforms—SCM6, Tagmaster, and Totem.

As President (2009 – 2013), Jake oversaw a major upgrade of the SCM platform, SCM6, and led a significant company expansion. SCM6 now serves as the online publishing platform for a growing list of the most accomplished organizations and publications in science, technology, and medicine.
