Speaker Biographies

 

Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, National Information Standards Organization

Todd Carpenter is currently Executive Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), a Baltimore-based non-profit that fosters the development and maintenance of standards that facilitate the creation, persistent management, and effective interchange of information used in research and learning. Working with NISO's broad constituency, Todd is working to improve the efficiency of the standards development process, extending the scope and participation of the community in standards creation and adoption, and enhancing the training and outreach programs NISO sponsors.

Prior to joining NISO, Todd had been Director of Business Development with BioOne, an online aggregator of scholarly journals in the biological sciences. Before joining BioOne, Todd was the Journals Marketing Manager at The Johns Hopkins University Press and participated in the development of Project Muse.

He has also held marketing management positions at the Energy Intelligence Group, a news service covering the oil and natural gas industries and The Haworth Press, a scholarly and professional publisher. Todd is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a master degree in marketing from The Johns Hopkins University.

  

 

Len Vlahos, Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group

Len Vlahos is the executive director of the Book Industry Study Group, a national not-for-profit trade association whose mission is to create a more informed, efficient, and empowered book industry. Prior to joining BISG, Len spent nearly 20 years at the American Booksellers Association, where has served as ABA’s communications director, e-commerce director, education director, and most recently, chief operating officer. Len has worked for Internet marketing pioneer Yoyodyne, and for Kratz & Co. public relations. Prior to joining ABA, he worked in independent, chain, and university bookstores.

 

 

 

 

John LawVice President of Discovery Services, Serials Solutions   

As vice president of discovery solutions, John Law leads a dynamic team that builds information solutions aimed at getting librarians and end-users to their information "discovery moment" effortlessly. John was the visionary and development leader behind the ground-breaking Summon™ web-scale discovery service. He continues to direct its progress, along with other discovery solutions including 360 Link and 360 Search, fueling adoption worldwide.

For more than a decade, John has focused on improving the user experience for library patrons, conducting multiple studies analyzing researcher behaviors and the barriers to library resource access. He is a frequent and popular speaker at industry conferences, addressing topics related to technology, user-centered design and product development, both from a library market perspective and in relation to new product development practices.

John holds a B.S. in systems engineering from Michigan State University, and a Masters in Technology Management from Columbia University in the City of New York.
 



 

Richard WallisTechnology Evangelist, OCLC

Richard Wallis, distinguished thought leader in Semantic Web and Linked Data technology, joined OCLC in 2012 as Technology Evangelist.


Richard has been at the forefront of emerging Web and Semantic Web technologies in the wider information world for over 20 years. He is an active blogger, and was a regular podcaster in the "Talking with Talis" series. From 2008 to 2010, he hosted and chaired "Library 2.0 Gang," a monthly round-table podcast series that brought together thought leaders, movers and shakers, and executives from leading organizations in library technology.

Richard most recently had been with Talis, a Linked Data and Semantic Web technology organization in the United Kingdom. He is based in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

 

 

Suzy Haines,  Digital Content Manager for Benetech/Bookshare

As Benetech's Digital Content Manager for Bookshare, Suzy Haines manages technical relationships with over 200 publishers worldwide. From a background in engineering and over 15 years experience with product and document accessibility at Sun Microsystems and IBM, she is currently helping publishers, technologists, and users design best practices for maximizing the potential of new digital media formats.

 


Roger C. SchonfeldProgram Director for Libraries, Users, and Scholarly Practices, ITHAKA

Roger C. Schonfeld is Program Director for Libraries, Users, and Scholarly Practices. In this role, he leads Ithaka S+R’s studies of academics’ and students’ attitudes, practices, and needs, as well research on the changing role of the academic library and scholarly society. He also consults with libraries and library consortia, digital humanities projects, distinctive collections and centers of excellence, and scholarly publishers.

Roger has served on the NSF Blue Ribbon Task Force for Sustainable Digital Preservation and Access and NISO’s Open Discovery Initiative. Earlier, he was a research associate at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, where he worked on projects related to college athletics and scholarly communication. Roger has a degree in English Literature from Yale University.
