Event Description
This program will explore how the publishing and library communities are facing the new digital marketplace, with a special focus on the standards that underlie the e-book supply chain. Rather than concentrate on differences and divergent needs, this forum will highlight the commonalities between publishers and libraries and what each group can learn from the other. In this way, we hope to draw out where cooperative approaches can solve common problems.

Metadata/Linked Data - Guiding Folks to our Resources Developments such as Linked Data have the potential to not only change and enrich the way metadata is created and used in libraries and the broad bibliographic sector, but also to utilise the power of the web to register our resources in a discoverable web of data. Richard will explore how data, published as Linked Data, can harness the efforts of the W3C and major search engines to guide users towards appropriately located resources. |

E-Book Discovery and Requirements for Metadata Delivering the best-possible search experience for end-users requires a cooperative effort by content providers, libraries, and vendors. Specifically, e-books provide great opportunity to increase usage of a library’s print collection through full text searching. However, maintaining accurate holdings information necessary for effective discovery of e-books is challenging given the different acquisitions models. This talk will outline an opportunity to optimize the discovery of content especially in the context of PDA/DDA in order to make e-books more readily discoverable, shorten the timeframe from when a title is available to when it is discoverable, and relieve some of the burden on libraries of maintaining holdings information. |

File Formats and Functionality: BISG Device Support Matrix EPUB3 is fast becoming the de facto standard for packaging and distributing book content in a digital environment. It was developed to take full advantage of the medium, and to provide publishers with opportunities to enhance electronic content. But if you build it, will they come? This session looks at the BISG EPUB 3 Support Grid, which details how various reading systems are implementing key components of EPUB 3 functionality. Attendees will also get an update on how the broader work of BISG’s Content Structure Committee is helping to promote and promulgate this developing new standard. |

Reading for All: Accessibility in a Digital World Even as ebooks become more popular and widely available, many people with disabilities continue to be denied the opportunity to read the books they want. This session will explore the new developments in ebook standards like EPUB3 and DAISY that look to bridge this gap by making it possible for all books that are born digital to be born accessible. |

User Practices and Needs In several recent qualitative and survey projects, Ithaka S+R has studied faculty members’ practices regarding e-books, their usage, and discovery, as well as their perceived needs. This talk will cover the role and value of the scholarly monograph, its discovery, and the opportunities and limitations seen in digital formats. Some key differences based on institutional and disciplinary affiliation will be highlighted. |

The Changing Standards Landscape is jointly organized by the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). Both organizations support, promote and maintain standards and best practices in the information community. NISO focuses on publishers, libraries, and the systems suppliers in information distribution. BISG focuses on the book supply chain of publishers, manufacturers, and wholesale and retail suppliers.
