Speaker Biographies

 

Angela Bole, Deputy Executive Director, Book Industry Study Group, Inc.

Angela Bole is Deputy Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group, Inc. (BISG). Based in New York City, BISG is an industry trade association working to create a more informed, empowered and efficient book industry supply chain for both digital and physical products.

 

Peter Brantley, Director, the BookServer Project, Internet Archive

Peter Brantley is the Director of the BookServer Project at the Internet Archive, a San Francisco based not-for-profit digital library. At the Archive, Peter has fostered the development and adoption of the Open Publication Distribution System (OPDS). With Gary Reback, he is co-founder of the Open Book Alliance, seeking an open and competitive market for digital books. Prior to working at the Internet Archive, he was Executive Director of the Digital Library Federation. He has been a member of the IDPF Board since 2007.

 

Michael Cairns, Managing Partner, Information Media Partners

Michael Cairns is Managing Partner of Information Media Partners a business strategy consulting firm. His career spans a wide range of publishing and information products, services and B2B categories and his years spent as a line-operating executive have largely been with brand name publishing companies such as Macmillan, Inc, Berlitz International and R.R. Bowker. His consulting experience includes engagements with Pearson, Reed Elsevier, Simon & Schuster, Cengage and Wolters Kluwer. Michael's experience includes board positions with the Association of American Publishers, Book Industry Study Group and International ISBN where he served as Chairman.

As President of information and database publisher R.R. Bowker, Michael led all strategic planning activities and managed the launch 10 new internet products. At his direction, the company acquired six companies that further broadened the revenue base and accelerated revenues derived from the internet and services.

Michael's work experience includes senior roles in the Entertainment, Media & Communications practice at PriceWaterhouseCoopers and he started his career at Macmillan, Inc after receiving an MBA from Georgetown University.

 

Todd Carpenter, Managing Director, National Information Standards Organization

Todd Carpenter is currently Managing Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), a Baltimore-based non-profit that fosters the development and maintenance of standards that facilitate the creation, persistent management, and effective interchange of information used in research and learning. Working with NISO's broad constituency, Todd is working to improve the efficiency of the standards development process, extending the scope and participation of the community in standards creation and adoption, and enhancing the training and outreach programs NISO sponsors.

Prior to joining NISO, Todd had been Director of Business Development with BioOne, an online aggregator of scholarly journals in the biological sciences. Before joining BioOne, Todd was the Journals Marketing Manager at The Johns Hopkins University Press and participated in the development of Project Muse.

He has also held marketing management positions at the Energy Intelligence Group, a news service covering the oil and natural gas industries and The Haworth Press, a scholarly and professional publisher. Todd is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a master degree in marketing from The Johns Hopkins University.

 

Phil Madans, Director, Publishing Standards and Practices, Hachette

Phil Madans is the Director of Publishing Standards and Practices for the Hachette Book Group, where he is driving the transition of HBG's production/editorial workflow from the traditional print-centric to a content-centric XHTML-based digital content creation platform. Phil has used his extensive experience in trade book publishing to evangelize new digital solutions for publishing workflows and processes, and is a sought-after speaker at industry conferences, including StartWithXML, Publishing Business Conference & Expo, BISG's Making Information Pay. He has also taught Digital Publishing at NYU's School of Continuing Professional Studies. Phil is currently a member of the Book Industry Study Group's Governing Council, co-chair of the BISG Identification Committee and chair of its Identifier for eBooks Working Group.

 

Monique Sendze, Information Technology Director, Douglas County Libraries

Monique Sendze has worked in information technology management for over ten years and currently works as the IT Director at the Douglas County Libraries. She holds a M.Ed. and a M.Sc. in Management Information Technology. Monique has contributed to information technology management articles in library publications and has served on the last 3 LITA top tech trends panels. At Douglas County Libraries, she leads efforts to fulfill their vision and mission through the effective provision of information technology, and has responsibility and oversight of computer services and applications, systems, networks, security web services and communications for the district.
