NISO 2009 Open Teleconferences

Join us each month for NISO's Open Teleconferences -- an ongoing series of calls held on the second Monday of each month as a way to keep the community appraised of NISO's activities. The calls also provide an opportunity for you to give feedback to NISO on our activities or make suggestions about new activities we should be engaging in.

The call is free and anyone is welcome to participate in the conversation.  To join, simply dial 877-375-2160 and enter the code: 17800743. All calls are held from 3-4 p.m. eastern time.

2009 Open Conference Call Calendar

  • February 9: NISO Architecture Committee (Premiere Call)
During the first call, Jeremy Frumkin, Assistant Dean / Chief Technology Strategist at the University of Arizona Libraries and the newly appointed Chair of NISO's Architecture Committee will discuss some of the ongoing work of the Architecture Committee. This is NISO's senior strategic planning committee responsible for setting strategic direction for NISO, gathering information on NISO-related work taking place in other organizations, and coordinating NISO's work plan with the Topic Committees.

Regular agenda items will be a Directors report of current NISO activities, an update of recent actions of the Topic Committee and working group activities, and an description of new projects that are under consideration or taking place in the community.  The call will end with an open discussion of any information standards or information technology related topic that the group would like to engage in conversation on. The call will last between thirty and sixty minutes depending on the amount of participation from those dialing into the meeting.
  • March 9: E-Resource Management System
Tim Jewell, Director, Information Resources and Scholarly Communication, University of Washington Libraries, and Ivy Anderson, Director, Collection Development and Management, California Digital Library,  will discuss future developments related to e-resource management systems. Building on the work of the DLF E-Resource Management Initiative (ERMI), the NISO Business Information Topic Committee is beginning to explore what next steps might be needed in the community regarding digital resource management. Mr. Jewell and Ms. Anderson are serving on a subcommittee that is researching a potential new work proposal that will focus on reviewing the ERMI Data Dictionary as it stands now, showing which elements map to what existing or ongoing projects. The result of this research should show gaps in the management needs and will be summarized in a report for the topic committee later this year. The Topic Committee will then determine if those gaps are immediate needs that would then require attention by NISO in those areas.  At present, the subcommittee is soliciting feedback on the status of ERMI and the needs of the community and participants in the call are encouraged to bring their ideas to the meeting.

In addition to the discussion on ERMI, regular agenda items discussed during the call will be a Directors report of current NISO activities, an update of recent actions of the Topic Committee and working group activities, and an description of new projects that are under consideration or taking place in the community.  The call will end with an open discussion of any information standards or information technology related topic that the group would like to engage in conversation on.

  • April 13: Standards Implementation: How to Ensure Success.
Adoption is among the most critical aspect of standards development, because without adoption all of the energy, time and thought that goes into developing a standard could be for naught if the standard isn't adopted and put into use.  We hope that this conversation will focus attention on the issues and barriers of standards adoption.  It is also an opportunity for the community to provide suggestions and feedback on the adoption work that NISO undertakes.

This month, we will feature Ted Koppel, AGent Verso (ILS) Product Manager, and Mary E. Jackson, Product Manager, Resource Sharing, both are with Auto-Graphics, who will highlight their thoughts on the adoption process and the work of NISO.  Ted serves as chair of NISO's Content and Collection Management Topic Committee and a variety of working groups, including SUSHI and CORE.  Mary serves on NISO's Education Committee and as a member of the NCIP maintenance group.  They will speak to the larger issues surrounding adoption of consensus standards.

  • May 10: The Supply Chain of Metadata
NISO and OCLC are partnering on a research project exploring the supply chain of metadata in the publishing and library communities.  Judy Luther, an industry consultant who led the project, will be describing the research work that she's undertaken and some of the preliminary results.  She interviewed more than two dozen industry leaders in order to get a picture of the number of organizations that handle or improve metadata for discovery, sales and retrieval of publications.  Based on these conversations, she is developing a map of the organizations, the file formats used, and the overall complexity of the metadata supply chain. The final report of this research will be released in late May.
