I was reading the question to mean “what is the equivalent XML MetricType to use for the metric listed for a database in the Excel file?”.
Metric name appearing in Excel file
XML Metric Type to use
Total searches run
searches_reg
Searches-federated and automated
searches_fed
Total sessions
sessions_reg
Searches-federated and automated
sessions_fed
Note that "Total searches run" does NOT include searches federated and automated (contrary to how the name sounds) -- the following is from Note 2 or the Code of Practice (page 22)...
Any searches or sessions derived from any federated search engine or automated search agent) should be included in separate “Searches_federated and automated” and “Sessions_federated and automated” counts
as indicated in the above report and are not to be included in the “Searches run” and “Sessions”counts
And Bernd is right to remind us that “Total” notes for a database (total for all months) or report (totals for all databases) are not permitted in the XML.
Thanks

the same thing?
if they were included, yes. But totals are not allowed in COUNTER XML.
