Where is the Supplementary Material Nov 2010
One of the issues that we as a group said might influence
our thinking as we consider metadata is "where"
the material being described resides. (This is relevant for
essential, related, and supporting (supplemental) material.)
Material may reside in (at least) one of the following:
- Within the article (as part of the physical file, for example
a binary file inside an XML file or as part of the PDF or
Microsoft Word file)
- Part of the article (not physically within the same file but
logically within it, for example, the graphics that accompany
XML files and are referenced from within those files). Such
material would be typically be expected to be part of an
article as reconstituted for online display, print,
interchange, or archiving.
- Packaged with the article (for example, three extra tables of
SuppMat send with the article files, but not intended for
display or print as part of the main article, separate from
but packaged with)
- External to the article (for example, a video, dataset, or web app,
that cannot reside within the textual article (coexist with the
narrative prose) by virtue of format or material that does
not reside with the article by publisher design)
At least two categories of external:
- housed and managed with the article
- housed and managed separately
You will notice that this list avoids involving the exact
physical location of the material (which we as a group
discussed) because I feel this is yet another orthogonal:
- Housed with author
- Housed with publisher
- Housed with private repository
- Housed with public repository
