Dear NISO community,
NISO will hold its next open teleconference in our monthly series Monday, April
9th at 3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
The topic for the April call will be the new NISO Open Discovery Initiative.
More information on this Working Group can be found at
http://www.niso.org/workrooms/odi/
The Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) aims at defining standards and/or best
practices for the new generation of library discovery services that are based
on indexed search. As the content for these indexes comes from a range of
information providers and products--commercial, open access, institutional,
etc., this group is interested in establishing a more standard set of practices
for the ways that content is represented in discovery services and for the
interactions between stakeholders: the creators of these services and the
information providers whose resources they represent. Libraries, a third set
of stakeholders, will also benefit from ODI as it will be easier for them to
assess the level of participation by information providers, to evaluate the
breadth and depth of content indexed, and the degree to which this content is
made available to the user.
Co-chairs of the Open Discovery Initiative Working Group, Marshall Breeding of
Vanderbilt University and Jenny Walker of Ex Libris will be on the
teleconference with ODI Working Group member Lettie Conrad of Sage Publications
to discuss the work on the ODI Recommended Practice, in particular the group's
charge and goals, and answer any questions. Other members of the group may be
present as well.
The call is free and anyone is welcome to participate. To join, simply dial
877-375-2160 and enter the code: 17800743#. All calls are held from 3-4 p.m.
Eastern time.
The Open Teleconferences are an quick way to get an update on the status of a
NISO initiative. The calls are informal and questions and discussion is
welcome. Following the featured discussion, there is also an opportunity for
the NISO community to bring up any issue or topic of interest. This is an
excellent time for you to raise any concerns, project ideas, or suggestions of
focus for NISO in the coming year.
If you are unable to join us, this call will be recorded and made freely
available on the NISO website following the event—as are all of the Open
Teleconferences. For more information or to listen to the previous call
discussions, please visit: http://www.niso.org/news/events/2012/telecon/.
We hope that you can join us.
Sincerely,
Nettie Lagace
