In early 2010, ANIS approved a request from NISO on behalf of the NCIP Standing
Committee to put NCIP under a review process called Continuous Maintenance.
Under Continuous Maintenance, it is possible to update the standard more
frequently than under the more traditional Periodic Review where a
reaffirmation is required once every 5 years. (For more information about the
NCIP policies for Continuous Maintenance, see
http://www.niso.org/workrooms/ncip/continuous.)
The first of the revisions to NCIP under Continuous Maintenance has now been
published and is available on-line. Links to Version 2.01 of the Protocol,
Implementation Profile 1, and the revised Schema are available at
http://ncip.info/documentation/standard. The Foreward of the Protocol contains
a summary of the various changes that have been introduced. The Standing
Committee is committed to maintaining backward compatibility at the major
version level. In other words, all revisions to Version 2 (e.g., 2.01, 2.02,
etc.) will be compatible with the original Version 2.0 (except of course for
any new capabilities that may be introduced). However, if and when a Version 3
is introduced, it may not be compatible with any revisions to Version 2.
If you are interested in recommending a change to the NCIP standard, there's
still time to submit your request for consideration at the upcoming April
meeting. All requests submitted by March 1 will be reviewed by the Standing
Committee in April, and another revision will be published if necessary.
Requests received after March 1 will be reviewed at the second meeting this
year. More information about the change request process is available at
http://ncip.info/home.
Much is happening with NCIP. Many new implementations are being put into
production, and the number of systems exchanging information with NCIP is
growing. Take a look at the NCIP website at http:www.ncip.info for more
details, and consider joining one of the Standing Committee's regular
conference calls or even attending a meeting. All of these calls and meetings
are open to anyone interesting in learning more about NCIP.
