Dear all,
Firstly, please accept our apologies for the radio silence from KBART
in recent months. We've had our heads down working on the report and
its recommendations, and didn't notice how much time was slipping by
without an update. Rest assured that the group has not faded away into
nothing! Quite the opposite ...
We're very pleased to be attaching the final draft of the KBART
report. This is being circulated to a number of groups this week:
* the UKSG and NISO sponsoring committees
* a group of volunteers who will test the metadata export and transfer
recommendations
* you, our patient monitoring group.
We invite your feedback and comments on the report - by October 16th,
please. At that point we will synthesize all the feedback we receive
and update the report as appropriate. We don't guarantee to be able to
incorporate all comments in the report, but we will certainly follow
up to explain our rationale if we don't, and put forward any
outstanding issues to be addressed by future phases of KBART's work.
This brings me quite neatly to the Future of KBART. I'm sorry to say
that both our co-chairs (Peter McCracken of Serials Solutions and
Charlie Rapple of TBI Communications) are standing down at the end of
Phase I - Peter is leaving the scholarly information community all
together, to pursue other projects, and Charlie has been appointed to
a different role within UKSG. NISO is in the process of appointing a
new co-chair to take over from Peter, and UKSG has already appointed
Sarah Pearson from the University of Birmingham (UK) to take over from
Charlie. We have no doubt that KBART will go from strength to strength
under its new leadership - as you can see from the "next steps"
section of the attached report, there are still 'many rivers to
cross', and we remain committed to crossing them!
The membership of the core KBART working group is also likely to
change at the end of Phase I, as all members will be given an
opportunity to step down and make way for other interested
individuals. If you would like to be more involved in KBART's work
ongoing, please do get in touch with one of us (details below).
Membership changes will take place at the end of phase I, which we
expect to be in November / December.
Please do not hesitate to contact any of us if you have any questions
about KBART at this point - and please do send us any feedback on the
report (by October 16th)!
With best wishes,
Charlie
