Greetings from Torquay! This is the inaugural KBART update newsletter, and is
being sent from the UKSG conference. Our intent is to provide updates to the
KBART Monitoring Group at least quarterly, and more often when appropriate.
This message is being sent to those on the KBART Monitoring Group distribution
list, and also to members of the Working Group. We weren't able to include
absolutely everyone who expressed interest on the Working Group, but we very
much welcome and anticipate input from those monitoring our progress.
The Working Group started meeting in March. We have a conference call once a
month, and have put together constituent-based groups to ensure coverage of all
relevant issues. Constituent groups will meet as necessary between monthly
calls.
KBART is a joint UKSG-NISO committee. To that extent, we need to follow
approval guidelines for both groups. We've received UKSG approval, as well as
final approval from the NISO Discovery to Delivery Topic Committee, which
oversees this project. You'll find a list of current members at the bottom.
So far, the committee has worked to create a list of definitions, with
specifics for various groups, to ensure the entire group is working from the
same set of terms. In addition, the terms will be useful for those who are
less-familiar with the actions of the OpenURL and what the KBART group is
working to do. Our next steps are to define workflows for the data that goes
into, and comes out of, knowledgebases, so that we can identify the problems
and challenges we hope to resolve.
Feel free to invite others to join the Monitoring Group. Individuals can join
by sending an email to kbart_interest-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Other items of note:
- Charlie Rapple has created a draft KBART logo, which other members of
the committee are assisting in modifying and improving.
- Charlie will be presenting two sessions on KBART at the UKSG conference
in Torquay, UK, this week. Several members of the Working Group also gathered
for drinks, and to connect names and faces, on the first evening of the
conference.
- Charlie recently had an article published about these challenges; the
title is "Knowledge bases: Improving the Information Supply Chain", in Learned
Publishing Vol. 21, no. 2 (April 2008): 110-115. The article is available at
http://dx.doi.org/10.1087/095315108X288947.
- UKSG currently maintains an informational website about KBART at
http://www.uksg.org/kbart, and a NISO site is coming soon.
