Greetings all,

Again, thank you for your participation in the Standards Development Workshops on E-Book Annotation Sharing and Social Reading, held by NISO a few months ago.  Your expertise, input and enthusiasm were instrumental in making the meetings such a success overall and providing much material for us to use to move forward.

We have been busy in the latest weeks preparing the final report to the Mellon Foundation, which generously funded the meetings. This was recently completed and is available at http://www.niso.org/apps/group_public/download.php/8135/mellon_annotation_final_report_public.pdf . It includes a narrative, links to presentation slides and notes from both meetings.  We hope you will be able to take a look.

I realize there has been a delay in the formation of the actual NISO Working Group to start moving this work forward into an ANSI/NISO standard, and I apologize for that. I'd like to kick-start that effort again with this email.  We would like to invite you to serve on the NISO Working Group to further discuss how the issues raised in the meetings could be addressed, and how a syntax for digital bookmarking and annotation sharing could be developed to serve the community. 

We envision that semi-monthly teleconferences would take place during the rest of 2012, likely involving the creation of sub-groups to examine/draft materials for more specific issues.   If this work is something that interests you, please send me a note by Friday, March 16. If all goes well, we can start meeting by the end of the month!

We are also happy to receive any further questions, either about the report to Mellon or the Working Group.
