New work item proposal for the revision of the NISO Recommended Practice, RFID in U.S. Libraries (NISO RP-6-2008; available online at http://www.niso.org/publications/rp/RP-6-2008.pdf).

The related ISO standard on RFID in libraries is in the final stages of development, with final publication expected in early 2010. In order to ensure that the NISO Recommended Practice is up to date and provides United States implementers of RFID tags in libraries with sufficient guidance to conform with the ISO work, a revision of the NISO Recommended Practice is necessary.

Ballot dates February 5-12, 2010.

Connecting Digital Preservation Repositories Roadmap

Purpose: to establish an international roadmap on long-term digital preservation standardization by identifying requirements, technologies, and best practices

Audience: invite international institutional content experts (scientific data and non-scientific data) plus technologists and standards experts in digital preservation around the globe

Keynote speakers: There will be three keynote speakers, one each day

SGDCMP participating countries: Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Singapore, Switzerland, UK, and USA. This event will be co-located with the ISO/IEC JTC 1/29 WG11 (MPEG); some of the technology presentations will be from MPEG experts.

Good afternoon members of AVIAC,

I hope that the new year is off to a productive start for you all. As usual, the AVIAC group will be meeting on Friday during ALA-MW in Boston. The meeting will be held at the Boston Convention Center, Room 157B from 4:00 - 5:00 pm. This year, because NISO is not exhibiting, the meeting is sponsored by the Ex Libris Group and we thank them for helping to arrange the space for this group.

Below is a brief agenda. Obviously, if you have topics you would like to discuss, please feel free to introduce them during the meeting.

1.    Defining Compliance - continuing discussion from Chicago meeting
2.    Encouraging adoption, what can we do to help?
3.    Open Source and Standards
     Should AVIAC should be reaching out to those groups? Are those groups working well with standards?
4.    What would you like to see happen between this meeting and the next?
5.    What efforts should NISO be focusing our development attention on in the coming 12-24 months?

Goals:
1.“Improve” the text of the charge by making it more general. The ‘charge’ (that is, the one sentence that describes the goal) is generally OK. But the paragraph of explanatory text beneath each ‘charge’ statement constrains, and in some cases confuses, the broader statement above. The ‘big print’ lays out the goal, while the ‘fine print’ starts to dictate how it ought to be done.
2.Merge overlapping deliverables, where sensible and possible.
3.Avoid creating implementation constraints for Service Providers.

The 2010 version of the ILLiad International Conference will be held in Virginia Beach, Virginia at the Hilton Hotel Oceanfront on March 24th, 25th and 26th, 2010.

The conference has grown over the years and now features a diverse program of sessions covering a variety of topics “Exploring Trends in Resource Sharing.” Registration is open to anyone with interests in the field of Resource Sharing, not solely to the current ILLiad user community.

Pre-Conference on Wednesday, March 24 promises to be one of the best yet with three-hour sessions on Resource Sharing, ILLiad and OCLC Data reporting, Copyright for libraries, Using the IDS/Workflow Toolkit, and an in-depth look at all the new features of ILLiad 8.

Communicating to other on staff at the library and to end-users the terms that have been negotiated in a license arrangement is not an easy process. Simplification and distribution of the information in a license are critical components to greater distribution and understanding. ONIX for Publication License (PL) is a structure of encoding and sharing in a machine-readable format the terms that exist in a license. This seminar will update attendees on the application and use of ONIX-PL. It will also explore future developments in the management of electronic resources.
