JATS has tagging for capturing monetary funding sources (<fundiing-group>, etc.), but there is a broader need to capture other, non-monetary support for research. The primary motivation for this comes from an ORCiD-led project involving ORCiD, several US Dept of Energy user facilities, publishers, and CHORUS to better track the research that makes use of user facilities. Institut Laue-Langevin has also expressed a similar interest. Beyond that, there is a need to track other kinds of support such a samples, maps, specialized equipment along with their identifiers (for example, Research Resource Identifiers or RRID).

Submitter Proposed Solution

Add new tags <research-support-group>, <research-support-source>, <research-support-description>, <research-resource-wrap>, and <research-resource-id>. The proposal reuses <award-group>, <award-id>, and other elements in analogy with the tagging of funding sources. One difference is that not all research suppport will have an associated award, so <research-support-source> should be able to appear outside of an <award-group>, at least the way things are modeled here (the two different cases are shown).
