In working providing accessibility alternative texts for journal content to be encoded in JATS a question has come up about how to do alternative text for inline equations.  In the current JATS <alt-text> is in

<array>, <chem-struct>, <chem-struct-wrap>, <disp-formula>, <disp-formula-group>, <fig>, <fig-group>, <graphic>, <inline-graphic>, <inline-supplementary-material>, <media>, <preformat>, <supplementary-material>, <table-wrap>, <table-wrap-group>

but not in <inline-formula>.  Any reason why <alt-text> was in <disp-formula> but not in <inline-formula>?   I suppose that one could use <alternative><textual-form> instead of <alt-text>.  Or <named-content>.   But it would be nice to have all the accessibility alternative texts encoded the same way across the document (as <alt-text>).

One alternative solution that has come up is using the mathml math@alttext for both display and inline equations and so put these into the MathML markup rather than the JATS wrapper. The amusing point is that the EPUB working group new accessibility guideline is saying not to  use the MathML @alttext but rather an aria attribute.  It could be best to have alt-text as an option for inline-formula as well as many other major JATS elements.

So a suggestion for an easy enhancement --- Evan Owens

The element <inline-formula> will contain both <alt-text> and <long-desc>.
