The documentation for <related-object> in JATS states:

"Best Practice: For each source, document, and object, an identifier is specified on the corresponding attribute. If the source and document are the same, the @source-id attribute should be empty. If the document and object are the same, the @object-id attribute should be empty. The @document-id attribute should always be specified."

This best practice statement suggests that whenever an entire book is the related object, then there should be no @source-id attribute present, but the book should be referenced via a @document-id attribute. This seems to be in conflict with the provided example on the same page:

<related-object source-id="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/

query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&dopt=Expanded&db=nlmcatalog&list_uids=1252893"

source-id-type="url"

source-type="book">

Submitter Proposed Solution

Either the best practice statement or the sample XML must change. What's more important is to have a consistent approach on how to refer to related objects accurately reflected in the documentation of both JATS and BITS.
