This comment is submitted by Jeffrey Beck on behalf of the Force11 Data Citation Implementation Group (https://www.force11.org/datacitationimplementation).

Researchers need to cite data sources (such as datasets) within the text of their papers as well as inside the reference list or in separate data-based reference lists. The current JATS reference models ('mixed-citation' and 'element-citation') have most, but not all, of the elements needed to cite data sources. The Force11 Committee would like to propose a few additional elements for data citation be added to JATS.

Scope: Archiving, Publishing, Authoring

Submitter Proposed Solution

Add the reference elements below to at least <mixed-citation>, <element-citation>, and <related-object>:

  • <version> - The precise version number of the data used. This is similar to, but not the same as, the current JATS 'edition' element. The differences are great enough that using 'edition' would be tag abuse, in our opinion.

  • <data-title> - Formal title of the dataset (may include applicable dates). This is similar both to JATS 'article-title' and JATS 'source' elements, but is specific to data sources.

<version>16.2.1</version>

<data-title>Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of American Youth (12th Grade Survey)</data-title>

Standing Committee Recommendation:

  • The element will be added to the list of citation elements, for inclusion in citations, product descriptions, et al. Documentation examples will include both datasets and software. (Definition: The precise version number of the data or software being cited; this is similar to, but not the same as, the current JATS element.)
  • The element (for the name of the data piece being referenced) will be added to the citation elements, for inclusion in citations, product descriptions, et al.

Documentation Recommendation

  • The scope of the is intended to be more like the scope of than like the scope of . The documentation must make these levels clear, since both and might be applicable for a cited dataset. The is the formal title of the data source or part of the data source being cited (may include applicable dates).
