The description of the role of DataCite is very weak: In some cases, datasets associated with an article may have been registered via DataCite, a registration agency focused on research data. If that is the case, the publisher should not re-register the dataset through CrossRef, but simply link to the DOI already assigned to the dataset. There is a joint statement between STM Assocation and DataCite (and Crossref signed it as well): http://datacite.org/node/65 Supporting File: |

DataCite is a non-commercial registration agency for datasets and datasets should be register by DataCite. DataCite and CrossRef make the linking between articles and reserach data possible. |
