The current <counts> model is rather restrictive in the sense that the Tag Suite imposes a specific constrained set of such statistical counts for an article: - figures - tables - equations - references - pages - words In practice, publishers may wish to expand on this list of count statistics in a number of ways. For example: - images (not only those in figures) - citations (there may be more than one citation per reference) - sentences - characters (bytecount) - sections - contributors

Instead of limiting the choice of count statistics with predefined tags, like <fig-count>, <table-count>, etc, the JATS Tag Suite could employ a uniform tag <count> under <counts> which takes a single required attribute @content-type with a list of recommended values, such as "figure", "table", "equation", "reference", etc. This change will make the <counts> tag more extensible and potentially more useful. It will also lighten the JATS Tag Suite from a number of pre-specified elements like <fig-count>, <table-count>, etc, as well as from the @count attribute.
