When the JATS was first being created, the Xlink standard held much promise. But is has not really been picked up and used by anyone.

Now we have all of those xlink namespace linking attributes that just create a burden on JATS content.
Submitter Proposed Solution
Suggest removing xlink attributes from JATS and replacing those that are being used (like href) with attributes from the JATS set.
