One of the components of an AMHS system is the software that runs the sorter. This also where the connection to the SIP2 server is configured. This is often referred to as the Warehouse Management System (WMS). The library has a lot of control over how that software is written (depending on the vendor). However it is important to recognize what you can do with that software.

The WMS can be configured to exploit the information accessed through the SIP2 connection for additional sorting. For example, items can be sorted by circulation status (holds, returns), by item type (books on CD, DVD, picture books, etc) or by shelving location (2nd floor, basement, children's room, etc). Using this information to define the sort destination can greatly optimize the the workflow at the receiving library. Items can be kept in totes and taken directly to the place where they are put on the shelf instead of being unloaded in the backroom and sorted, and then shelved.

Presorted totes make it possible to prioritize handling of certain types of material. For example, the holds can be grabbed right away and put on the shelf so those people rushing to the library as soon as the see their item in transit will actually find the item on the hold shelf.

Hopefully, you get the idea...
