In the third paragraph, you state that "Most current systems rely on SIP2[2] messaging to communicate with the ILS, which may require a separate SIP2 license with
the ILS vendor."

I'd like to recommend that you add this statement immediately after the line above:

Although not yet implemented, it is possilbe to use RFID tags for sorting thereby eliminating the need for the SIP2 connection. This would require the destination location (and possibly other sorting information) to be written to the tag before it is placed in a delivery bin.
