Defines the composition and order of the unambiguous alphanumeric identifier string in the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) system used to reference an intellectual property entity in the digital environment.

The 2005 revision made three requirements-related changes. These were:
1) In section 4, making the DOI string case insensitive.
2) In section 4.1 to exclude the control character ranges 0x00-0x1F and 0x80-0x9F from being valid characters in a DOI string.
