Abstract:

NISO RP-6-2012 provides recommendations for implementing RFID in U.S. libraries in a manner that will promote interoperability. It includes a recommended Data Model and discussions of security, tag migration, the book supply chain, privacy, and vandalism. It serves as a U.S. profile to the three-part international standard ISO 28560, RFID in Libraries.

All sections of the original 2008 document have been reviewed and updated to reflect changes in practices for protection of personal privacy, support advanced functionality, facilitate security, protect against vandalism, and allow the RFID tag to be used in the entire lifecylce of the book or other library materials.

Description:: New work item proposal for the revision of the NISO Recommended Practice, RFID in U.S. Libraries (NISO RP-6-2008; available online at http://www.niso.org/publications/rp/RP-6-2008.pdf). The related ISO standard on RFID in libraries is in the final stages of development, with final publication expected in early 2010. In order to ensure that the NISO Recommended Practice is up to date and provides United States implementers of RFID tags in libraries with sufficient guidance to conform with the ISO work, a revision of the NISO Recommended Practice is necessary. Ballot dates February 5-12, 2010.
