5/6 - Patron and Material Identifiers returned in responses

In order to support Interlibrary Loan the best we can, it's possible for multiple items to share a barcode number in our system (but it should be rare). When returning a patron's information in a 64 or 28 response, we like to use our internal, unique identifier (in the form of "id:342343") rather than the material barcode (in the form of "98712"). This works in general, but 3M's self-check machines throw a fit if our response contains a different item identifier than the one requested, and their reading of the SIP2 spec is defensible. Is it possible for the Item Identifier to work like the Patron Identifier, which can be corrected? When a 63 request is sent, the 64 response contains the canonical version of the patron identifier, which the client then accepts. Materials should work the same way.

14/8/2013 Conference Call:

A number of systems mentioned which returned normalised AA (patron identifiers) including changing formatting, adding/removing prefix or checksums. Some systems which accept multiple patron identifiers (e.g. barcode and username) will return the preferred patron identifier. Agreed that AA should still be returned in response and spec make it clear that the server may return a preferred normalised form which may not exactly match the form used in the request. Further information needed as regards the Format Identifier.
